The Cambodian Blogosphere is, for the most part, a warm and supportive online community of Cambodians in Cambodia and spread around the world, ex-pats in country blogging about their experiences, and others like me who are interested in the country's beautiful culture.

Check out this blog workshop!

This week several Cambodian bloggers conducted a workshop on Personal Information Technology at International University. Kalyan Keo was one of the presenters.   Khmerak (aka Phnom Penh Geek) who is off to Malaysia, along with Lux Mean - also shared their experience.

This is very exciting to read about.  It looks like it was more of a presentation than hands-on lab experience (I'm sure computer labs with Internet connections aren't easy to come by.).   As I read about this, a lot of questions came to mind:

• What was the reaction?

• What opportunities do they have to actually go forth and blog - or at least set one up and get to post regularly?



• What types of questions did they have?



• What was the content presented by the presenters? 



• Also, what it presented in Khmer or English or both?

I would love to be able to do a workshop like this in Cambodia some day ...

Mongkol in San Francisco

Mongkol has landed in the US and is visiting relatives in San Francisco before going up to Portland for an orientation and then onto Boston.   And, he has a new blog address - moved it to wordpress.  You can find it here.

Seeking Volunteerwork in Nonprofits/Technology in Cambodia

My colleague Patricia Perkins, who is a computer geek and has worked with nonprofit organizations, will be doing a world tour.    She is looking for some volunteer opportunities where "help nonprofits working to turn back the tide of poverty to use the technology at their disposal."  Her plan: "To find local nonprofits, roll up my sleeves and see what I can contribute."

Cambodia, is in her itinerary from Mar 26-May 21, 2006.

Meet ZJ: Blogging to improve Cambodia's environment

Meet Zarah Jane Almeida who works as  a producer for Mlup Baitong's Environmental Advocacy Radio Program.   She has been blogging about her work and life at Sreisaat Adventures in Cambodia  since January, 2004.  Born in Roxas City, known as the seafood capital of the Philippines,  she graduated from the University of the Philippines with a degree in mass communications.   She moved to Cambodia in April, 2000.

World Bank asks, "Will blogs change development thinking?"   A Web4Development Conference several months earlier raises this question in a keynote from Jeff Jarvis and post that includes who reads blogs at the World Bank.

The second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) will be taking place next month Tunsia.   WSIS has just released a special report "Information Society: The Next Steps" that looks at how the ICT landscape is changing in the developing world and what lies ahead. Experts from governments, donors, NGOs and the private sector speak out about effective policies, promising applications and innovative business models.

A Resource for Cambodia Bloggers in Cambodia

The Committee to Protect Bloggers is devoted to the protection of bloggers around the world.   In a host of countries around the world bloggers are routinely imprisoned for their activities. The blogging community should not leave the responsibility for their well-being in others' hands.

The Committee has four primary spheres of activity.    

• CPB will serve as a clearinghouse for information on incarcerated members of our community, as well as those whose lives have been taken from them because of their enthusiasm for the free exchange of information that blogging allows.    
• CPB will serve as a pressure group to force unrecalcitrant governments to free imprisoned bloggers, and make restitution for tortured and murdered ones.    
• CPB will bring to bear the formidable communicative power of the blogosphere to keep pressure on governments to stop arresting and abusing bloggers and to mitigate or reverse measures designed to restrict speech.

Cambodia Bloggers Meetup

Last Sunday, the Cambodian bloggers had their monthly meetup. Although kind of sparse, three of the most prolific Khmer bloggers got together for some bubble tea and conversation about the Cambodian blogosphere.  Sounds like they are  planning some local awards. 

I sure wish I could skype into the meeting ...
