Somaly Hay, master Khmer Dance teacher, performed a solo at the Water Festival, the blessing dance.  She also taught a culture class for our kids on Sunday.   She was kind enough to demonstrate the basic Khmer dance gestures - as she said "Cambodian dancers talk with their hands."   Andy Carvin captured some great footage of the Angkor Dance Troupe at the opening performance if you want to see the hand gestures in action.

At the our culture class, we learned the word for monk in Khmer.  It sounds like lauch song.    So, here's some clips of monks at the Water Festival.

Water Festival Moments

I'm about to be out of range of all Internet connections, but we stopped here in Bangor, Maine for coffee and there was a wi-fi in the coffee shop.  So, I'm posting the three vlog posts I created.    Don't expect much more from me until September.

Sarak & Botum Dance: Vlog #3

Sarak and Botum love to dance.  They like to watch DVDs in our Khmer dance musi collection.  They've been to Cambodian classical dance performances and have been taught Khmer social dancing by Cambodians here in the US.  They really enjoyed Village Girl's Dance video -- so we decided to make our own.  However, they still don't quite have the dance steps down, but they try hard!  A favorite around our house is arapayaa.

Learning Khmer Language Vlog: Meet Sarak & Botum

I figured out how to add a soundtrack.  This is so addicting.  So, consider this the first installment in the Sarak & Botum learn Khmer series of vlog posts.  I'm sharing my reflections on what I learned via the listserv that Eath set up for Khmer vloggers.

Cambodians Are Eligible

Discovery Asia and mobile communications provider Nokia are looking to reinvent the concept of filmmaking by providing mobile phone users everywhere with access to knowledge and technology of a new genre – mobile filmmaking.             

The companies have partnered to launch the Mobile First Time Filmmakers Contest 2005, which will give consumers the opportunity to try their hand at mobile filmmaking and qualify to win a prize of $10,000.  People in Cambodia are eligible to participate in this content, although you probably have to already own the phone.  Read more here.

Anyone thinking about doing this?  Anyone have that phone?
