While visiting the Click Klick blog, I came across this amazing collection of photos of young people from different Southeast Asian countries waving their flags, including the one above of the Cambodian flag.
I emailed Mongkol for more information and he responded with:
These are pictures from the Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program 2005 (SSEAYP). It is actually a youth program sponsored by the government of Japan and participated by 11 countries from ASEAN and Japan. During the program, we travelled to 6 countries onboard a cruise ship called Nippon Maru. This year, they travelled to Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, Philippines and Japan. Everytime we reach a new port of call, we all have to do such flag performance to introduce ourself to the country. (More information can be found here.)
I thought about the times in this country when young people wave the American flag - what immediately came to mind was July 4th parades, a celebration of the freedoms that Americans enjoy. I wonder when Cambodians can raise their flags and celebrate freedom?
