Today, about 10 minutes before I had to leave for the Making Media Now Conference in Boston to do a workshop for documentary filmmakers on how to use social media tools to market their films, I got the blue screen of death. I had to let it go and actually did ...
The workshop and curriculum can be found here. A few things I incorporated and would like to tweak.
- We got started ten minutes late, so was a little rushed. Using the David Wesch's video "The Machine is Us/ing Us" was an effective teaching method for filmmakers. I wonder if this will work as well with people who are not filmmakers? It did with Extension Professionals. I wonder if it will translate to nonprofits.
- This wiki joke went over well: What happens when a crowd of film fans use a wiki?
- In the olden days, I used to hand out envelopes to participants at the end and ask them to write down a goal or two and put their name and address on the envelope. I would tell folks that I would mail the note to them in 4 weeks as a reminder. Because I got the blue screen death, I forgot the envelopes. So I asked folks to write down on the back of a business card or piece of paper their goal or idea to try within the next month and their email address and that I would remind in a month. I had to restate the instructions again and I said, "Write down on the back of the $20 bill"
- Rather than painfully print and cut up the cards myself, I used kinkos. They came out great! And it saved me time. I had to laugh when someone asked me if they were sale. They're being licensed with nc license from David Wilcox so that would not be cool for me to charge.
- On Sunday, for Boston Media Makers, I will facilitate a discussion from participants about their best online promotion tips. After you have video blog up and running, how do you attract an audience. While my hard drive is reformating, I will think of creative ways to extract and capture this knowledge -- and share it.
I could continue to complain about my PC computer crash, but I won't. I actually needed this hit the pause button ... more later.
