Sometimes when I get overwhelmed, my reaction is to dive into my blog reader. A new form of work advoidance. So, a few days when I was particularly crazy, I went rolling through my reader. When I saw that I had been tagged on Nancy White's blog, I left a crabby comment. Heck, it's the weekend, so I thought I'd respond.
This meme is on media consumption. This meme was started by Jeremiah Owyang, calling it "media consumption diet."
Web: Like Nancy, I'm consuming way too much on the web. Here's a few tools I'm using:
- Email: I'm using the comfort blanket that is outlook. I've wanted to change to gmail, but need a slow period. I live at the post office.
- Browser: I use firefox unless I'm forced to use explorer because of a work contract.
- Bookmarks: del.icio.us and magnolia. I use onlywire bookmarklet to be able to multi-task
- Wiki: I love wikispaces, but also use mediawiki, socialtext, and pbwiki.
- RSS Reader: I am in the process of switching from bloglines to google reader because google reader offers an easier way to organize on the fly and the it analyzes what you are actually reading.
- IM: Skype, Google Talk, Yahoo
- I've been using twitter off and one since November. I'm still not sure why.
- Too many others and because I'm being lazy, I'll point you over to Social Source Commons and you can find my toolbox.
Radio:
Local classical and NPR stations and random stuff on the web. I listen to music on my IPOD while I blog. Recently, I'm addicted to Sarasate and virtusouso violin music.
TV:
I use tivo because of the kids. They still think that PBS is the only option. I'm addicted to Nova, American Experience, Globe Trekker, and whatever else is on PBS. Guilty pleasure is Lost and yes I printed up the labels. If I watch TV, it doesn't get my full attention since we got wireless in the house. I tend to sit on the couch and also watch video on the web.
Movies:
With kids, you don't want to know what I get to actually see in the movies. Those days are gone.
Books:
I used to have impulsive book buying disease. I had more books than bookshelves. That's not what I am able to spend money on these days. Sometimes I get freebies from publishers who want me to review the book. If there is a book I really really really want, I search for freebie chapters on the Web or use the search inside feature in Amazon.
Magazines:
Can't afford subscriptions, but when you get offers for your extra miles .. I take advantage. Right now I have wired and runners magazine. But, if I have to pay cash, forget it.
Newspapers:
When I used to pay for newspaper subscriptions, it was the Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal, and New York Times (Sunday) I'm tired of spending extra time at the dump on Saturday -- so decided to forgo the subscriptions and find whatever I could online. It's also cheaper.
Music:
I was trained as a classical musician and love music - world music, latin music, jazz, world music, you name it. Not so much rock or popular music, but I hear it at the gym for spin classes and it's okay.
