Harry had his piano recital last night. He performed two pieces he had memorized. At the last minute, he got nervous and asked me for the music. I videotaped his performance and we talked about ways to improve the pieces/practice. I don't expect that he will be concert pianist one day, but music study and performance offer a chance to learn some great life skills -- discipline, reflecting on on your performance and thinking about improvements, all the content skills of playing the piano and learning music. Plus, supposedly this helps his brain develop. I think he did an impressive job for being six years old. He really wants to learn the cello, but he won't be old enough until he reaches 8 or 9, but the piano will provide a great foundation.
Give Harry a high five from me. At age six I was still picking out hot cross buns. Now I'm 14 years old, and love the piano, although have zero intentions of being a concert pianist. I prefer showing off for family and friends. :)
