I've been attending the weekly Friday TechSoup meetings in Second Life and you run into the most fascinating people. Last week, I met an avatar named Budley Omegamu who turned out to be Sombit Mishra who is a Technology Associate at GlobalGiving. He coordinates web development, donor traffic and analytics, and technical marketing for the team. Currently, he's developing new viral strategies to increase exposure, traffic, and donations to projects featured on GlobalGiving.
Prior to joining GlobalGiving, he completed his Masters in International Relations at the London School of Economics and his Bachelors in Economics/History at Northwestern University. He wanted to work for an organization that facilitates bottom-up approaches to sustainable development and after seeing an ad in the Idealist he jumped at the opportunity to GlobalGiving's team.
(I didn't know Sombit until I met him - as they say - "in-world" in Second Life. And since I serve on the board of the Sharing Foundation and our organization was recently selected to be included on GlobalGiving ... I felt compelled to mention these two facts only because I feel it is part of my board duties ... and who knows, someone may follow the link and contribute.)
In Second Life, we would like to create a virtual GlobalGiving community that features project descriptions and links, along with virtual representations and games to educate and inspire volunteers to market and raise funds for projects on globalgiving.com. The most attractive components of Second Life are that physical distance is a non-factor and information can be disseminated easily, which is exactly how we want people to feel about the GlobalGiving experience. We are actively looking for designers that would be williing to create virtual property on our behalf and market it to the SL community.
If you're curious, skeptical, or trying to wrap your brain around the possibilities of nonprofits in Second Life, put July 18th 6:00 PM PST on your calendar. Details will be available soon!
